Linfield 2 Lisburn Distillery 1

Linfield Under 17s took to the field at Ballymacash on New Year's Day hoping to secure the opening trophy of the season. They got off to a good start dominating possession and on 8 mins livewire striker Jonny Frazer connected with skipper Jackson Griffith's cross to poke wide of the goal. The Blues had other shots at goal but all failed to test the Whites' custodian. Against the run of play Distillery took the lead on 22 mins when Linfield failed to clear a free kick and the Whites' right winger was hauled to the ground in the 18 yard box - the resultant converted penalty gave the Ballyskeagh men the lead. This gave the Whites something to hold on to and their confidence grew as the half progressed and they nearly added to their tally on 31 mins when their centre forward blazed over the bar when well placed. Linfield seemed shell shocked but with the half time whistle approaching Matty Robinson stung the fingers of the Distillery goalkeeper.

Linfield made three changes at half time with Curtis Dempster, Declan O'Neill and Craig Gardiner entering the fray. This paid dividends with O'Neill pulling the strings in the middle of the park and linking well with the industrious Nathan McAleese. Frazer again went close on 54 mins followed by Stewart Marshall just missing the target 3 mins later, but eventually the incessant pressure paid off when Dempster latched on to an O'Neill through ball only to be upended by the goalkeeper in the box. The referee had no option but to send the keeper off, and after Dempster had dusted himself down, he slotted home the spot kick. This now made for a pulsating climax to the game, but there was more drama on 70 mins when Linfield midfielder Robinson also received his marching orders for an altercation with a Distillery player. Frazer again went close on 72 mins when he hit the post with the keeper well beaten. As the clock ticked down and extra time loomed, O'Neill received a pass from Griffith and caressed a curving shot high and wide of the keeper into the Distillery net - a goal worthy of winning a final at any level of football. Linfield ran down the clock and ran out worthy shield winners in the end

The man of the match award chosen by the match officials was given to Linfield midfielder Declan O'Neill
