A match report that evokes memories of a Linfield v Linfield Swifts County Antrim Shield tie back in the 1980s.
Two Linfield academy teams face off in NIBFA Plate last 16
Linfield 2008 and Linfield 2009 squad faced off against each other on Friday night at Midgley Park in the last 16 of the NIBFA Plate competition.
The young 09 squad couldn’t have asked for a better start, as they won the ball straight from kick off and within the first two minutes went 1-0 up. A Jake Hirthe shot brought a good save from 08 goalkeeper Ben Maxwell but Jay Longridge was there to finish with the rebound.
This kicked the 2008 squad into action. After some good build up play and quick counter attacking football Jude Cargill netted a first half hat trick and winger Jay Murray added a fourth just before half time. Score line was quite harsh on the 2009 squad who were playing some brilliant football throughout the first half.
The second half started quickly with both teams playing some really good football. The 2008s added a fifth through Jude Cargill's glancing header from a Zac Bannatyne cross.
For much of the second half the 2009s pressed and played some great football resulting in the goal of the night when young Alfie Jones turned two defenders and fired the ball accross sub goalkeeper Max Sykes and into the bottom corner of the net. The match finished with both teams in great spirit and looking forward to the rest of the respective seasons.
A great advert for our academy and a performance to be proud of by both squads!
Academy director Glenn Ferguson offered each squad some wise words after the game in which he expressed his delight and congratulations on a great match between two promising academy sides!
