DJ discusses return of Robert Garrett

Posted : 8th November 2013

DJ spoke to Linfieldfc.com about the return of Robert Garrett from Canada.

"First of all, I'll take a quick step back and remind supporters what happened earlier in the year. Robert asked the club could he go out on loan to Edmonton where Daryl Fordyce and Albert Watson had just moved to. At that stage, the club agreed to Robert's request until the end of the Canadian season.

Robert played his last game for Edmonton last Saturday and he returned to Northern Ireland yesterday. I met with him at Windsor Park on Thursday night at training.

Robert advised me that in the first instance, he is not intending to return to Canada for the start of their season in the New Year.

His intention in the first instance, is to see out the rest of his contract with ourselves which will take him up to June.

Robert went to great pains to emphasise to me how appreciative he was of the way the club had handled his request and understood his situation in allowing him the opportunity to go over to Canada and play football on a full time basis.

Having had the benefit of that experience, he doesn't know what his long term plans are going to be.

In the short term however, he is fully focused and determined to repay the club for the understanding shown to him in allowing him to go on loan to Canada.

The practicalities of the situation are that he won't be available for selection with ourselves until the opening of the transfer window in early January. Having only finished a league season last Saturday, he's going to have a break for a few weeks before returning to training with ourselves in December, in preparation for being fit and available for selection in January.

He will undergo a medical in the week ahead, so all things being equal, Robert will be rejoining the group in the next few weeks.

He has enjoyed his loan spell in Canada and is so grateful and appreciative that this club allowed him to go on loan at the particular time he went. He is highly determined and motivated to repay the club for our understanding, by making a significant contribution to the team and squad over the remaining months of this season."
