Over the past few weeks has launched a new ‘Monday morning memory lane’ feature in which we focus on two separate photos and the interesting story behind the photos.

Increasingly, over the coming weeks there will be a European theme to this feature and in the first of today’s two photos we reflect on a photo, as the players set off for a European tie in Luxembourg in September 1966.

European cup 1st round 1st leg

September 7, 1966

Aris Bonnevoie 3 Linfield 3

Linfield goals were scored by Bryan Hamilton, Phil Scott and Sammy Pavis.

The team line up was - McFaul, Gilliland, Patterson, Gregg, Hatton, Leishman, Ferguson, Hamilton, Pavis, Scott and Shields.

A week later Linfield won the return leg at Windsor Park by a 6-1 margin. Arthur Thomas grabbed a hat trick, Phil Scott a brace and the other goal was scored by Sammy Pavis.

In the next round Linfield won 4-1 away to Valarengen of Oslo in October and drew the return game 1-1 in November.

It meant that in March 1967 Linfield faced CSKA Sofia of Bulgaria in the Quarter final of the European Champions Cup. After a 2-2 draw at Windsor Park, Linfield exited the competition after a 1-0 reverse in the Bulgarian capital.
