Over the past few weeks Linfieldfc.com has launched a new ‘Monday morning memory lane’ feature in which we focus on two separate photos and the interesting story behind the photos.
Increasingly, over the coming weeks there will be a European theme to this feature and in the second in today’s two part series, we feature an image of the match programme from the European Cup first round second leg tie against Standard Liege of Belgium on September 29, 1971.
Linfield had lost the first leg 2-0 in Belgium two weeks earlier with a team line up of McGonigal, Fraser, Patterson, Larmour, McAllister (Brown), Bowyer, McAteer, Peacock, Magee, Andrews and Cathcart (Hill)
For the return leg at Windsor Park, Scott replaced Andrews - with Andrews coming on as sub for Peacock.
The Belgians won 3-2 at Windsor Park with Linfield’s goals scored by Eric Magee (58 mins) and Albert Larmour (63 mins).
It was a tragic night for Linfield with goalkeeper Detek Humphreys having been killed in a traffic accident on his way to the Windsor Park game against Standard Liege.
Below are match action images of the Standard Liege game and a tribute to the late Derek Humphries from the club captain Eric Bowyer published in the subsequent programme for a City Cup game against Glenavon on October 9, 1971.
The same programme announced that a fund had been set up in memory of Derek and to assist his grieving widow - with the fund being opened with a £200 donation from this club.
