Over the past few weeks Linfieldfc.com has launched a new ‘Monday morning memory lane’ feature in which we focus on two separate photos and the interesting story behind the photos.
Increasingly, over the coming weeks there will be a European theme to this feature and in the first in today’s two part series, we reflect on a programme cover and goal images from Linfield’s 1st round 1st leg 1-0 home win against La Fiorita of San Marino.
The game took place on yesterday’s date of June 28 three years ago and the goal by Jordan Stewart in the first game of the season was to win the club’s ‘Goal of the season‘ award.
It was a dream debut solo goal in the last minute of the game from Jordan Stewart.
The goal was significant in another way too - the winner of the tie was drawn to play Celtic in the next round and as a result, there was increased interest in this game against La Fiorita of San Marino.
Linfield could again face opposition from San Marino in this season’s Champions League preliminary round. Tre Fiori are this year’s representatives from San Marino in the UEFA Champions League.
Linfield will face one of the champions of San Marino, Andorra or Kosovo on August 8 in the semi-final - with the winners of this game playing the winners of the other semi-final on August 11 for the right for the winner of the 4 team tournament to join the first qualifying round proper of the UEFA Champions League.
The Linfield team that lined up to play La Fiorita at Windsor Park three years ago yesterday was -
Carroll, Haughey, Stafford, M.Clarke, Casement, Smyth, Mulgrew, Lowry, Quinn (J.Stewart 60’), Burns (C.Stewart 74’) and Waterworth
