Abbie Magee goal seals hard earned victory

Linfield kicked off the new season’s Premier league campaign with a 1-0 win against Sion Swifts at New Midgley Park tonight.

Before the game Linfield took delivery of the Danske Bank NIFL Premier League 2018 Champions flag and in the next week, this flag will fly proudly from a new pole on the roof of the New Midgley Park pavilion.

Goalkeeper Nicole Adams took ill pre Match and had to be replaced in the team line up by Lauren Perry - her first game since a cruciate injury on 18 August and a cruciate operation on 10 September - a remarkably quick recovery from serious injury.

The only game of the game came after 17 minutes when Linfield’s Abbie Magee fired into the far corner of the net from the edge of the box.

Overall, Linfield deserved the victory against strong opponents but who on the night just couldn’t carve out a clear opportunity against a resilient Linfield defence.

Linfield captain Kirsty McGuinness hit the crossbar with two shots - one in each half but the story of the game was the excellent performance of Sion keeper Nicole McClure who made a string of superb saves to keep Linfield at bay.

Linfield just couldn’t get the second goal as they found the World Cup bound Jamaican keeper in inspired form.

Linfield’s Megan Bell played for her team on her 18th birthday.

The Linfield player of the Match award sponsored by Ronnie Morrison was presented to Rebecca McKenna who celebrated her 18th birthday on Saturday past.

Tonight’s match was sponsored by the Linfield Supporters Trust.
