Linfield’s UEFA Champions League campaign came to an end yesterday and the players and staff will return to Belfast this morning.
The players did Linfield proud securing a first win in the three game tournament and the two defeats were by respectable score lines against much higher ranked and seeded teams,
The group was won by hosts Anderlecht with 9 points, Hot favourites and second place Lillestrom were eliminated with 6 points while Linfield’s 3 points ensured a third place finish ahead of fourth place PAOK.
Linfield had the honour of playing yesterday’s game in Anderlecht’s Constant Vanden Stock Stadium (Lotto park) where Vincent Kompany’s team play their home games.

Deloose gave the home team a 24th minute lead and doubled the advantage on 34 minutes to give Anderlecht a 2-0 interval lead.
Kirsty McGuinness was fouled in the box on 55 minutes and scored the resultant penalty to halve the deficit. It was her second penalty in two games following on from her historic match winning penalty against PAOK on Saturday.
Coryn restored Anderlecht’s two goal advantage on 66 minutes and an injury time effort from Rebecca Bassett came back off the upright in injury time.
