Youth Cup 1st Round
Aquinas 0 Linfield 7
Holders Linfield took to the pitch at Rathmore with no fewer than eight under 16 players starting the game against a determined Aquinas team who were after the Windsor Park boys' scalp. In a turgid opening quarter it was hard to see where the opening goal was going to come from, but eventually after some good approach work Darren Hyland picked out Aaron Brown at the back post on 21 minutes and he duly converted to open the scoring. Linfield were getting into their rhythm with Cai Gemmill, Callum McVeigh and Ross Weatherup dominating the centre of the park, and soon it was two nil when Lee Rea finished well from 10 yards with 30 minutes on the clock. Linfield had only two goals to show for their ascendency, but the second half was to prove a different proposition.
The half was in its embryonic stage when the Blues notched number three with Brown again on hand to steer the ball home from close range after good work on the right flank from the excellent Mark Green. It was now one way traffic to the hosts goal and with 50 minutes on the clock skipper Weatherup glanced home McVeigh’s right wing cross followed three minutes later with the impressive Hyland tapping home unopposed at the back post after good approach play from young sub Ewan Kelly. Brown completed his hat trick on 62 minutes followed by a great finish from North Belfast boy Green with five minutes remaining to complete a good day for Linfield
Although most of the action was in the attacking end of the pitch a mention must be given to David Walsh who was very confident and steady on his debut and Peter Bell and Lee Bailie who were excellent throughout.
