League Cup Quarter Final

Ards 0 Linfield 5

High flying Ards who are top of the Group A youth league took on Linfield at a cold and damp Queen’s playing fields last Friday night. Right from the first whistle Linfield took the game to their Co Down opponents, dominating the ball and carving out chances at will.

With 18 minutes on the clock the deadlock was broken when Ruairi O’Hare’s speculative free kick somehow eluded the Ards keeper to end up in the back of the net from all of 30 yards. It was a constant stream to the Ards goal and soon one became two when the outstanding O’Hare headed in Callum McVeigh’s pinpoint corner to double the lead. There was no respite for Ards and soon it was three when excellent combination play from under 16 players Trai Hume and Carl Johnston on 27 minutes teed up the mercurial Ben Wylie to stroke home from 15 yards. Adam Carroll who was ploughing a loan furrow all evening at centre forward got his name on the score sheet just before the break to give the game a true reflection of the Blues' first half dominance.

More of the same followed in the second half with Linfield superior in all departments. Ards did create a few chances but found Scott Pengelly in resolute form. The Blues had further chances to increase their lead with captain Ross Weatherup, Jake Corbett and Ethan Wynne all going close. With the clock ticking down, Linfield made it a nap hand when the classy Carroll finished sublimely over the advancing keeper from a pinpoint pass from Lewis Quinn.

Overall, a fine performance which takes the team into their second semi-final of the season.
