Linfield suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght this evening. First half goals from Finn and Kilduff put the home side in command but BJ Burns produced a stunning finish to get the Blues back into the game. It proved to be short-lived however as Kilduff and substitute Rice added further goals to leave Linfield facing a mountain to climb in the second leg. A late penalty miss from Brian McCaul summed up Linfield's evening.

The Blues suffered a pre-match blow when goalkeeper Alan Blayney was unable to take his place on the bench and he was replaced by Nathan Hanley. The home side were quickly into their stride and forced five corners in the opening six minutes. Shane Robinson had an opportunity for the home side after 9 minutes but his shot was straight at Glendinning after clever play on the left.

Linfield's first real chance of the game came on 31 minutes. Carvill's free kick from the right was headed back across goal by Lowry and BJ Burns shot over the bar from around 12 yards. The opening goal of the game came after 34 minutes. O'Connor's low free kick from the edge of the box was pushed out by Glendinning and Ronan Finn reacted quickest to fire home from close range.

Rovers almost got a second goal on 42 minutes. Ross Glendinning did superbly well to tip Sheppard's long range shot onto the bar and, in the goalmouth scramble which followed, Jim Ervin headed off the line.  The second did arrive on the stroke of half time. Sheppard crossed from the right and Ciaran Kilduff rose highest to head past Glendinning from close range.

Rovers deservedly ahead at half time and it could have been more as Linfield faced waves of pressure from the home side.

Half Time: Shamrock Rovers 2 - 0 Linfield

Billy Joe Burns had an early chance for Linfield at the start of the second half but curled his free kick narrowly wide from 25 yards. Michael Carvill had a terrific right foot shot on 56 minutes which had the goalkeeper beaten but went inches over the bar. The Blues got back into the game with a goal on 63 minutes and what a strike from Billy Joe Burns. Sheppard headed the ball out and BJB let fly with a right footed half volley from 25 yards into the roof of the net.

Rovers got a third goal on 73 minutes and it was Kilduff again, somewhat against the run of play. He held off his marker and the shot seemed to drift past Glendinning in slow motion and nestled in the corner of the net. It was 4-1 on 83 minutes. Pat Sullivan released substitute Stephen Rice and he broke clear of the Linfield defence to slot the ball past Glendinning. Linfield blew a great chance to give themselves a lifeline on 90 minutes. Philip Lowry was fouled in the box and referee Doyle awarded a penalty. Brian McCaul's spot kick was well saved by Murphy low to his left and Ryan Henderson failed to find the net from the rebound.

A comprehensive defeat for Linfield and it will take something special to turn this tie round.
