Andy Waterworth's last gasp header salvaged a late point for Linfield on a frustrating afternoon at Windsor Park as a defensive Warrenpoint proved hard to break down.

Linfield called the visiting goalkeeper into action for the first time after nine minutes when Niall Quinn pulled the ball back to Joel Cooper with an inventive free-kick. Cooper slid the ball into the path of Waterworth but he fired into the goalkeeper’s arms from close range.

The game broke into life on 17 minutes when Warrenpoint Town took the lead from the spot. A controversial penalty was awarded for the visitors when Alan O’Sullivan went down under Matthew Clarke’s tackle. Experienced defender Simon Kelly dispatched the penalty into the net, sending Roy Carroll the wrong way.

Niall Quinn almost replicated his midweek goal but his thunderous volley was well saved by Aaron McCarey, before the keeper got up again to push away Michael O’Connor’s header.

Somehow, the ball stayed out on 38 minutes when Cooper’s shot was parried into the path of Waterworth, whose shot was incredibly deflected off the line. Jimmy Callacher also went close in an onslaught at the end of the first half, curling just wide from distance.

Half Time: Linfield 0 – 1 Warrenpoint Town

Kirk Millar had a volley saved in the opening stages of the second half before Point midfielder Fra McCaffrey curled a finessed shot just wide of the post at the other end.

Warrenpoint had ‘parked the bus’ and showed little intention to attack in the second half but Simon Kelly did go close to a second with a free-kick from 20 yards.

Michael O’Connor headed onto the roof of the net on 76 minutes after brilliant footwork from Jordan Stewart as the Blues searched for an equaliser.

Striker O’Connor went even closer a minute later, volleying a well-struck shot just over the crossbar.

Warrenpoint would have wrapped up a victory on 82 minutes when O’Sullivan breezed into the box unopposed before Callacher put in a vital block.

Visiting goalkeeper kept up a fine performance to deny Linfield again on 89 minutes, getting an outstretched arm to deny Michael O’Connor.

The Blues were on the brink of defeat until Andy Waterworth struck an equaliser with the last kick of the game. Kirk Millar picked up the ball out right after Mulgrew's driven shot was parried away, with the winger firing in a pinpoint cross for Waterworth to convert a brave diving header as he received a battering in the process.

Full Time: Linfield 1 – 1 Warrenpoint Town
