Linfield fought to the wire as stand-in skipper Chris Casement bagged a precious injury time winner for a hard-fought victory away to Newry this evening.

The first half was very competitive but fairly uneventful. The first chance of the game was worked by the hosts as midfielder Declan Carville took on a shot from distance but Gareth Deane held it well.

Lively front man Mark McCabe also tried his luck after making time and space on the edge of the Linfield box but yet again Gareth Deane was able to deal with it comfortably.

Linfield - operating in a 3-5-2 with Josh Robinson partnering Kyle McClean in the centre in place of injured skipper Jamie Mulgrew – had the best opportunity of the half. The trusted delivery of Niall Quinn fired in a corner and Mark Stafford powered a header at goal, only to see it crash back off the crossbar.

Ryan McGivern also had a good chance in the closing stages of the half when Josh Robinson headed a Daniel Kearns cross back into the centre and defender McGivern connected but he hooked over from close range.

Linfield strikers Waterworth and Cervenka also threatened. The former turned well and looked to be going through on goal before the defender recovered well. Later on, Cervenka turned well and run at the Newry back line before firing over from the edge of the box.

Half Time: Newry City 0 – 0 Linfield

Controversy arose early in the second half when a Linfield man was brought down on the edge of the box. Newry players were furious and believed that their man took the ball. Josh Robinson placed the ball on the penalty spot but a free-kick was the end result. Casement struck it but his effort was deflected and the resulting corner saw Mark Stafford head over from a Niall Quinn corner.

The Blues passed up a big chance when a cross dropped kindly for Ryan McGivern but the defender drilled a volley just wide of the far post.

Another cross dropped kindly for Kyle McClean but the impressive midfielder fired straight at Andy Coleman in the Newry goal.

The closing minutes of the game were very cagey with both teams searching for a winner. Linfield looked in danger when Carville drove forward into space with men options either side but he was hesitant in possession and Ryan McGivern produced a vital intervention.

Chris Casement sparked jubilation in the away end in the second minute of injury time with a big goal to clinch the three points. Much credit must also go to Niall Quinn who cut down the left before hanging up a cross to the back post for Casement to power home a header to ensure Linfield maintain their nine point lead at the top of the table.

Full Time: Newry City 0 – 1 Linfield
