ANDY Waterworth’s double gave Linfield victory over Ballymena United in the County Antrim Shield semi-final this evening as The Blues booked their place in the final.

Ballymena pressed early on but the only real chance they created was comfortable for Roy Carroll as Ryan Mayse had a go from the edge of the box.

Linfield went close from the trusted set piece delivery of Niall Quinn as Josh Robinson got on the end of Quinn’s corner, only to see his header cleared off the line by the head of United veteran skipper Tony Kane.

Andy Waterworth gave Linfield the lead on the half hour mark, as he made it a remarkable 145 goals in 250 Linfield appearances. The ace predator was on hand to tuck the ball home from four yards out and Stephen Fallon’s turn and shot at goal.

James Knowles also whipped a free-kick over the crossbar from 25 yards in search of a leveller, although in truth it wasn’t a classic first half.

Half Time: Ballymena United 0 – 1 Linfield

A bright start to the second half from Linfield was rewarded on 57 minutes as Andy Waterworth netted his second of the night. Joel Cooper did well down the left before pulling the ball back to Jordan Stewart, his shot was parried by Ross Glendinning in the United goal and Waterworth followed up to tuck home the rebound from close range.

David Jeffrey released his formidable strike partnership of McMurray and Friel off the bench soon after, although McMurray will be disappointed not to have found the net on 72 minutes when he fired over from close range.

Just as things were going as hoped for Linfield, Ballymena put the cat amongst the pigeons with a goal on 75 minutes. William Faulkner dinked in a cross and Cathair Friel supplied a cool header to make it 2-1.

Chris Casement went within a whisker of a stunning third for Linfield which would have made the closing minutes a bit more comfortable. The full back took on a left footed strike from distance and he struck it superbly, only to see the ball smash off the post.

United mounted pressure in the late stages of the game but Linfield stood tall and defended resolutely, meaning David Healy’s men will take on Crusaders in the final on February 5.
