Report
Linfield took on Ulsterman Stephen Robinson’s Motherwell team at Windsor Park in a pre-season friendly this afternoon to aid preparation for their upcoming Champions League clash with Rosenborg.

Shayne Lavery was due to start for the Blues but there was a late change after the warm-up and he had to be replaced by Michael O’Connor. This left a vacancy on the bench which was filled by Lorcan Forde who’d just returned from holiday.

Linfield started brightly and engineered a good move down the left side which allowed Matthew Clarke time and space for a cross after a surging run and he produced an inviting low cross across the face of goal but no Linfield player was on hand to take advantage as ‘Well cleared at the back post.

The Steelmen took the lead on 28 minutes after an uncharacteristic mistake by Mark Stafford when his backpass was too weak and striker Christopher Long nipped in to take the ball around Gareth Deane and fire the ball into the net despite Jimmy Callacher’s best efforts.

The striker almost added a second minutes after the opener when he got on the end of a cutback but he fired a volley just over from a good position.

Mark Gillespie was tested in the Motherwell goal at the end of the first half when Niall Quinn got a glancing header on the end of Chris Casement’s free-kick but the ‘keeper displayed good handling.

Half Time: Linfield 0 – 1 Motherwell

The Scottish Premiership outfit added a second goal early in the second half when Liam Polworth’s free-kick from the left side was headed into the corner by the rising Peter Hartley.

Jimmy Callacher then prevented a third when Christopher Long pulled the ball back for Liam Polworth who was denied what looked like a certain goal as Callacher threw his body in the way.

Half time substitute Alex Moore made a good stop in the Linfield goal when he sprung across to beat away a driven effort by the overlapping Long.

Instrumental Long went close again with a low free-kick from the edge of the box but his effort crashed off the inside of the post, with Alex Moore seemingly getting a fingertip to the strike in the process.

Two substitutes combined as Jordan Stewart’s switch of play was touched down by a trialist into the path of the surging full-back Trai Hume who won a corner. The resulting corner was delivered well by Matthew Clarke and Lorcan Forde was unmarked but fired just wide, not getting the desired contact on his effort.

Ruthless Motherwell added a fine third goal on 68 minutes with a beautifully struck free-kick from Jake Carroll from 20 yards leaving Moore with no chance in the Linfield goal.

Linfield’s lively trialist winger also went close to a Linfield goal when his cross-come-shot from wide was tipped onto the crossbar by the goalkeeper.

James Scott showed dancing feet to beat a few Linfield players inside the box before trying to finesse a shot into the corner but Alex Moore made another good stop, this time with his feet.

Full Time: Linfield 0 – 3 Motherwell
