Joel Cooper and Shayne Lavery both bagged hat-tricks as Linfield cruised past basement side Warrenpoint Town at Windsor Park tonight to move within two points of League leaders Coleraine with two games in hand.

The Blues opened the scoring after just eight minutes. The Blues had Warrenpoint penned in early doors and a long spell of possession finished with Joel Cooper setting up Stephen Fallon on the edge of the box to slot the ball into the far corner with a low strike.

Healy’s men could have been out of sight within twenty minutes, only for the heroics of Berraat Turker in the Warrenpoint goal. Linfield were playing some great football. The first well-worked move saw McGivern’s raking pass hit first time into the middle by Millar for Lavery whose first-time shot was saved. Turker then produced a great save to keep out Lavery’s header from Clarke’s cross, and then again to keep out Lavery’s powerful volley after Millar’s header into his path.

The second arrived on 22 minutes, much to do with the great enterprise of the in-form Joel Cooper. The winger took the ball past men at will with great close control before putting in a pinpoint cross which Shayne Lavery clinically converted on the volley from close range.

Kirk Millar and Matthew Clarke were both desperately unlucky with both players firing wicked strikes just wide of the post. Ryan McGivern also went close as Linfield searched for a third when Larkin headed a corner across goal but McGivern headed the wrong side of the post from close range.

Shayne Lavery added his second and Linfield’s third just before the break in some style. The pacey striker raced onto Bastien Hery’s through ball and despite being met by the onrushing Turker, the ball fell kindly for Lavery who produced a cheeky finish, back-heeling the ball into the net from the edge of the box. Coolness personified.

Half Time: Linfield 3 – 0 Warrenpoint Town

There were no signs of Linfield taking the foot off the gas in the second half and Shayne Lavery completed his hat-trick in the 49th minute. The striker peeled away down the left before cutting inside and firing a sweet low strike into the corner to put The Blues four up.

Four became five on the hour-mark when Matthew Clarke’s corner was headed in by the ever-impressive Joel Cooper who took his tally for the season to seven goals.

The same due combined again in identical fashion as Cooper’s header from Clarke’s corner was pushed onto the crossbar by Turker. Substitute Matthew Shevlin was also denied by the ‘keeper when he received the ball inside the box and fired a powerful shot at goal.

Shevlin passed up another good chance to make it six when Matthew Clarke when possession high up the pitch and slipped the young striker in but he couldn’t get enough bend on his shot to find the corner.

The sixth goal arrived in the 83rd minute when Kirk Millar received the ball out right before picking up yet another assist, finding Cooper in the middle who slid the ball in for his second of the night.

The Ballyclare native completed his hat-trick two minutes from time with a trademark goal, cutting in from the right and drilling a low strike into the net from the edge of the box to cap a ‘Man of the Match’ performance.
