Manager’s programme notes
Posted : 1st July 2019
Today it is a pleasure to welcome Motherwell FC to Windsor Park for what’s sure to be an attractive and challenging pre-season friendly game. Their manager Stephen Robinson will of course be no stranger to Windsor Park and this game and indeed, next week’s home game against Tommy Wright’s St. Johnstone team will be excellent preparation for our upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign.
We have been drawn against Rosenborg of Norway in the UEFA Champions League and we know how tough that game will be against a team that are highly experienced in competing at this level and beyond. This year we will have the added bonus of a second European game, either in the Champions League or in the Europa League and these games will be great experiences for our players.
I want to thank our board for assisting our European preparations, by way of an intensive and highly professional pre-season training camp in Marbella, Spain. The team bonding during the time away was highly beneficial and we held a behind closed doors training game against Dinamo Bucharest of Romania on Wednesday evening.
I also want to thank our board for the faith they have shown in me, by offering me an extended contract as manager of this great club. I love being manager of this club and I love the challenges that come with it. I’m absolutely delighted to have agreed this deal to extend my contract and I want to assure our supporters that I am entirely focused on bringing further success to the club. Other clubs have improved and strengthened over the past few months and our aim is to be ready to meet the challenges they will provide.
I want to welcome new signings Shayne Lavery and Ross Larkin to the club. They are players who I have admired for some time and I’m delighted that they have agreed to sign for us. We also welcome goalkeeper Alex Moore back to the club, following a very successful loan spell at Dungannon Swifts.
Several players have left us over the close season and in particular, I want to pay tribute to Roy Carroll who was absolutely brilliant for us during his popular and succcesful time at the club.
Others who have left include Conor Mitchell, Kyle McClean, Marek Cervenka, Benny Neilsen, Jonathan Smith and Cameron Stewart.
It was great to meet so many of our supporters at our Open Day last week and indeed, at the club’s annual end of season Gala awards event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in May. I know you were delighted with the trophies we won last year but that’s history now and our aim is to bring more silverware and glory to this club over the coming months
