Over the past few weeks Linfieldfc.com has launched a new ‘Monday morning memory lane’ feature in which we focus on two separate photos and the interesting story behind the photos.
Increasingly, over the coming weeks there will be a European theme to this feature and in the first in today’s two part series, we feature match action photos from the Europa League first round, second leg tie against Cork City on tomorrow’s date of July 7 four years ago.
Cork had won the first leg 1-0 at Windsor Park in a game that was to mark the debut in goal of Roy Carroll.
Roy’s heroics in the 1-1 second leg draw at Turners cross almost helped Linfield overturn this first leg deficit.
The home team took the lead from the penalty spot shortly after half time but Mark Stafford equalised for Linfield soon after, to keep the tie in the balance. Unfortunately, Linfield just couldn’t get the second goal that would have sealed the tie on the away goals rule.
The Linfield team that faced up to Cork City on July 7 four years ago was
Roy Carroll, Matthew Clarke (McLellan 89), Niall Quinn, Mark Haughey, Mark Stafford, Kirk Millar. (Burns 78), Jamie Mulgrew, Stephen Lowry, Andy Waterworth, Paul Smyth and Ross Gaynor.
Two stunning photos from a memorable evening in Cork below.
