European participation - future and past

After today’s excitement of UEFA Champions League and Europa League quarter and semi final draws to complete the 2019/20 season, attention will turn to next Friday’s UEFA Champions League preliminary round draw to kick start the eagerly anticipated 2020/21 season.

Linfield will take part in a four team tournament with the champions of Kosovo, San Marino and Andorra with the winner progressing to the first round proper of the tournament.

Linfield have been advised by UEFA that the games which will take place in Nyon, Switzerland on August 8 and 11 are strictly behind closed doors, so it is important that supporters are aware of this information ahead of the draw and do not therefore make travel arrangements.

While the club is looking forward to once again participating on the European stage, albeit in unprecedented and unfortunate circumstances, takes the opportunity to look back at European games in recent years on this July 10 date - as well as yesterday’s date and the day before yesterday’s date.

On this July 10 date last year Linfield lost 2-0 in a home Champions League 1st round 1st leg tie against Rosenborg of Norway

On this July 10 date in 2013 Linfield defeated IF Fuglafjordur of the Faroes 3-0 in a 1st round 2nd leg Europa League game to complete an aggregate 5-0 win.

Goals were scored by Gault, Mulgrew and P. Lowry and the team line up was.

J Tuffey, M Gault, P Lowry, P Thompson, M Carvill, BJ Burns, A Burns (M McAllister 46'), M Clarke, Knowles, J Ervin and J. Mulgrew.

Linfield progressed to a second round meeting with Skoda Xanthi of Greece,

Also on this July 10 date but in 2012 Linfield drew 0-0 in Tórshavn against B36 of the Faroes but won 4-3 on penalties to progress to a second round date with Limassol of Cyprus

The team line up was Glendinning, Ervin, Curran, Armstrong, Douglas, Fordyce (McCaul 65), Garrett, Mulgrew, Carvill, Thompson (Browne 77) and McAllister

On yesterday's date of July 9 in 2009 Linfield lost a Europa League 1st round 2nd leg tie 3-0 to the Danes of Randers at Mourneview Park. The first leg had been lost 4-0 in Denmark and the team line up was

Also on July 9 but in 2015 Linfield were involved in Europa League 1st round 2nd leg action.

Linfield travelled to Toftir in the Faroes after a first leg 2-0 win against NSI Runavik and a 4-3 defeat in the Faroes meant that Linfield progressed by way of a 5-4 aggregate to a second round encounter against Spartak Trnava from Slovakia.

On July 8 in 2014 Linfield drew 1-1 at home to B36 Tórshavn of the Faroes at Windsor to win 3-2 on aggregate and progress to a second round date with AIK of Sweden. The second leg tie took place at Mourneview Park with Michael Carvill scoring Linfield's goal.
