On this July 24 date in 2014 Linfield played AIK of Sweden in the Friends arena in Stockholm in a Europa League 2nd round 2nd leg tie.
There was sadness in the pre match build up to this game with the passing of the former chairman, the late Billy McCoubrey for whom a minute’s silence was observed in Stockholm.
Linfield went into the game with a one goal advantage, thanks to Andrew Waterworth's late goal in the first leg at Mourneview Park.
However, two second half goals from the Swedes saw them home to a 2-0 win on the night and a 2-1 aggregate success.
However, Linfield came very close to snatching the precious away goal and had Jamie Mulgrew's last minute strike from distance been an inch or two lower, it would have been Linfield rather than AIK who would have been packing bags to travel to play Astana of Kazakhstan in the next round a day or two later.
The Linfield team on duty in the impressive Friends arena was - Tuffey, Glendinning (Mulgrew 58)' Hegarty, Richards, M.Clarke, Sproule (R. Clarke 62), Ward, Lowry, Burns, Waterworth and Carvill (Thompson 75).
