Almost 50 years ago - on September 30, 1970 to be precise - Linfield recorded one of the greatest results in this club’s proud history - defeating the then European Cup Winners cup holders, Manchester City 2-1 at Windsor Park in the first round second leg of the 1970/71 tournament.
Alas, the City team comprising their legends of Bell, Summerbee and Lee progressed to the next round on the away goals rule, courtesy of their first leg 1-0 win at Maine Road a fortnight earlier.
Linfield FC had hoped to mark the special 50th anniversary of the tie with a reunion event in the Crowne plaza hotel on September 19, but unfortunately the government restrictions arising from the Covid 19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the planned event.
To mark and celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of this historic result, the board of directors of Linfield FC has decided to bestow the prestigious honour of Life Membership of the club on the player who achieved immortality by scoring the 2 goals at Windsor Park to record this famous result against one of the giants of English football.
Billy Millen has been awarded the Life membership Honour - the highest honour this club can bestow on one of its servants - in recognition of his leading role in one of the most famous games in this club’s illustrious history.
Billy has been living in Sydney, Australia for many years and he had been looking forward to being a special guest of honour at the planned 50th anniversary function, until the global health crisis intervened to force the cancellation of the eagerly anticipated event.
However, his son Billy junior is still resident in Northern Ireland and he along with Billy’s brother in law, the legendary Linfield goalkeeper and Life member, George Dunlop will receive the Life members ticket on behalf of Billy in the near future.
Full coverage of the presentation and reaction from Billy, his son and brother in law will be provided on Linfieldfc.com at the appropriate time.
Congratulations to Billy Millen, 2 goal hero at Windsor Park on that memorable Windsor Park evening almost 50 years ago and whose achievement is appropriately being saluted with this special honour of the award of Life membership of the club Billy served with distinction.
