Newry come into this game in 10th place in the league table, 3 points ahead of Dungannon Swifts, with Portadown a further 5 points behind. The South Down team arrive at Windsor Park, having lost their previous game 4-3 to Portadown in a dramatic late ending last week at the Newry Showgrounds. Making a return to Windsor Park today will be former Linfield and Northern Ireland defender Ryan McGivern.
The Blues
Linfield return to Windsor Park following last week’s 2-0 League Cup Final win against Coleraine. Following Larne’s win last night, Linfield trail the East Antrim club by 10 points, with today’s game in hand. Linfield are in 3rd position, trailing Second placed Cliftonville by one point. Linfield are ahead of Crusaders and Glentoran by four points. Sixth place Coleraine are a point further behind, and in today’s round of fixtures, Cliftonville host Dungannon, Glentoran travel to Carrick, Crusaders travel to Portadown and Coleraine are on the road to Glenavon.
Last meetings
Both previous games between Linfield and Newry this season have been at the Newry Showgrounds. Linfield won 3-1 in August and 2-0 in October. On Newry’s last visit to Windsor Park - on October 13, 2018, Linfield won 3-1 thanks to a hat trick from Jimmy Callacher.
