Alison Smyth makes comeback from injury as Glens win on wet night at the Oval

On a wet and wild night in East Belfast, a physically strong Glentoran team collected maximum points, courtesy of a 2-0 win against a youthful Linfield team that showed a lot of spirit and resilience.

Linfield lined up with the same starting line up and subs from last weeks 2-0 win against Crusaders - on a night when star forward Casey Howe celebrated her 18th birthday.

Glentoran took a 4th minute lead when the dangerous Hamilton fired low into the bottom far corner at the City end of the Oval stadium.

A few minutes later, the home side had the ball in the net again but it was ruled offside by a linesman’s flag.

Linfield grew into the game and a snap shot from Casey Howe in the 33rd minute was pushed behind for a corner by keeper Burns.

Half time - Glentoran 1 Linfield 0

On a treacherous night, with puddles on the pitch at the home stand end of the ground making passing football difficult, both sides gave their all.

Making her comeback from a career threatening injury over two years ago, Alison Smyth was introduced as a sub for the hard working Rebecca Bassett on the hour mark.

After 62 minutes the home team doubled their lead when a great right wing cross from Hamilton found its way to Beattie at the back post and she bundled the ball into the corner of the net.

There were yellow cards for Fitzsimmons after 56 minutes and O’Donnell after 69 minutes.

On 72 minutes Cora Morgan replaced Hayley O’Donnell and in the 75th minute Ebony Leckey replaced an injured Victoria Carleton.

Linfield never gave up and kept looking for a way back into the game. On 85 minutes a Casey Howe effort following a corner was blocked by a defender and in the 87th minute Alison Smyth got on the end of a right wing Leckey cross but her goal bound flick was pushed behind for a corner by Burns in the home goal.

Final score - Glentoran 2 Linfield 0
