Late goal sees Blues exit Irish Cup

Posted : 9th July 2021 at 22:21:33

A late goal condemned Linfield to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Cliftonville in tonight’s Irish Cup tie at New Midgley Park.

Lucy Johnston had given Linfield an early lead with her first senior goal for the club.

However, 2 Cliftonville goals saw them lead 2-1 at the break.

A fierce strike from a tight angle by Rebecca Bassett was ruled offside to deny what would have been an equaliser.

Half time - Linfield 1 Cliftonville 2

Linfield did draw level when the Reds’ keeper upended Rebecca Bassett and Victoria Carleton tucked away the resultant penalty kick.

The visitors grabbed a late winner to deny a very young and hard working Linfield team.

Rhyleigh Marks was a late sub for Rebecca Bassett on a night when Mia Fitzsimmons captained Linfield.

Final score - Linfield 2 Cliftonville 3
