Report
Linfield completed their build up to next Saturday’s Champions League preliminary round tie against the champions of San Marino with a 1-0 win at Oriel Park.

Dundalk had drawn 1-1 with St Pats last night in their first game back after the restart and so were using this game to give game time to players in need of a run out.

It was a fiercely competitive game throughout and very similar to last week’s 1-0 win away to Shelbourne.

Today’s game was another behind closed doors training game with no supporters in attendance due to the restrictions in place as both parts of this island aim to emerge from the corona virus lockdown.

The only goal came from Shayne Lavery in the 9th minute. He got behind the last defender and lobbed the ball over the advancing Former Warrenpoint keeper McCarey.

It was a game of few clear cut chances with both defences largely on top in an absorbing contest.

Half time - Dundalk 0 Linfield 1

Half time subs were Waterworth, Stafford and Hery and as the half wore on the home side came close on several occasions to grabbing an equaliser. Their efforts were largely shots from distance which cleared the crossbar.

Mid way through the half Trai Hume and Brandon Doyle came on as subs.

In the closing stages Dundalk had three good chances to equalise.

Firstly, their number 25 was clear but Chris Johns got down low to make a fine stop.

Chris Johns made an even better save minutes later when he got down low at the post to push a close range back header behind for a corner.

There was nothing Johns could do when the Dundalk number 18 fired in a great strike from outside the box but it rattled the cross bar and went behind for a goal kick.

An excellent work out against quality opposition and attention now turns to Next Saturday’s Champions League game against the champions of San Marino.

Final score - Dundalk 0 Linfield 1
