Linfield welcomed Northern Ireland hero Michael O’Neill and his Stoke City team for a hard-fought friendly between the teams at Windsor Park which was decided by Josh Tymon’s first half strike.

The Potters started the game brightly and went close within two minutes. Danish midfielder Lasse Sorensen put in a dangerous corner which wasn’t dealt with and the ball bobbled into the path of Stoke full-back Morgan Fox whose shot clip the outside of the post.

David Healy’s men were more than holding their own and went ever so close to taking the lead after eight minutes. It was a good move from Linfield as Stephen Fallon’s central pass was flicked on by Andy Waterworth to Christy Manzinga who cut in from the left and curled 20 yard shot just wide of the far post.

Linfield’s well-structured shape limited Stoke City to few opportunities in the opening first half, but their one defensive mistake led to an opening goal for the visitors. A defensive slip allowed Benik Afobe in behind and the former Arsenal striker slipped it across to winger Josh Tymon who punished Linfield with a fierce drive into the bottom corner.

Christy Manzinga – operating off the left wing – cut inside onto his right foot once more towards the end of the first half but this time his curling shot flew over the bar. Soon after, Stoke striker Benik Afobe powered home a header which was ruled out for a clear foul on Mark Stafford.

Half Time: Linfield 0 –1 Stoke City

Along with goalkeeper Jack Butland, highly-rated Stoke City prospect was intorduced at the break and ten minutes later the winger floated in a pinpoint cross for Benik Afobe who peeled to the back post before his header was hooked off the line by Ross Larkin.

Afobe threatened again soon after when he latched onto a looping ball into the Linfield box. The striker showed great strength to turn in the box but his close range shot was well saved by the feet of Chris Johns.

Brandon Doyle replaced Matthew Clarke during the drinks break on 67 minutes and the winger almost made an instant impact, bursting off the left flank and spreading the ball wide right to Kirk Millar whose fierce cross flashed across the box begging for a touch.

Doyle went close himself after showing good footwork to make room for a shot on the edge the box which flew wide of the post. Soon after, Matthew Clarke had to be reintroduced following a knock to Ethan Boyle. The Blues then finished with ten men as Jimmy Callacher limped off.

Full Time: Linfield 0 – 1 Stoke City
